Deep in Nagano Prefecture, where mountain peaks seem to touch the sky, lies one of Japan’s most fascinating spiritual treasures.

Togakushi-Jinja is not a single temple, but a complex of five sacred shrines (Okusha, Chusha, Hokosha, Kuzuryusha and Hinomikosha) spread across the slopes of Mount Togakushi. At Asiahop, we believe that this destination represents the purest essence of Shintoism and the deep connection between Japanese culture and nature.

The history of this place is linked to the country’s most ancient mythology. Legend has it that Togakushi came into being when a stone gate from a heavenly cave was thrown down here, allowing sunlight to return to the world. For more than two thousand years, these shrines have been a refuge for monks, ascetics and samurai seeking protection and wisdom among its ancient forests.

One of the most impressive features of Togakushi is the path leading to Okusha Shrine. This path is flanked by more than four hundred giant cedars that are approximately four centuries old. Walking among these wooden giants creates an atmosphere of solemnity and peace that is difficult to find on other tourist routes in Japan.

In addition to its spiritual significance, the area is famous for its close connection to the ninja warriors of the Togakure school (Togakure-ryū). The rugged terrain and dense forests historically served as a training ground for these legendary figures. Today, visitors can explore this heritage while enjoying the local cuisine, especially the region’s famous soba noodles.
