On the eastern coast of Kyūshū lies Miyazaki Prefecture, a region with tourist attractions such as Takachiho Gorge, Udo Shrine, and the Nishitachi restaurant and entertainment district. But one of the most impressive places in Miyazaki is the small island of Aoshima, just over half an hour by train from the prefectural capital.

Aoshima is a picturesque island just over 1.5 kilometres in circumference. This small island, connected to the prefecture’s coast by a footbridge that makes it easily accessible, is notable for its rich biodiversity, curious geological formations and spiritual significance. One of the island’s biggest attractions is the Aoshima-jinja Shrine, a Shinto shrine surrounded by dense subtropical vegetation, which stands in the centre of the island. This shrine is dedicated to the gods of creation, marriage and family harmony, attracting many young couples who visit to pray for a happy and lasting relationship.
In addition to its spiritual significance, Aoshima is famous for a unique geological phenomenon. The rock formations called Oni no sentakuita (鬼の洗濯板), meaning “the devil’s washboards”, are alternating layers of sandstone and slate that run parallel along the coast, forming a striated pattern reminiscent of a washboard. These rocks were formed millions of years ago and have been shaped by the action of the wind and sea, offering a spectacular landscape, especially visible at low tide.

The island is also part of the Aoshima Subtropical Botanical Garden, where you can see more than 200 species of plants, many of which are rare in Japan, such as certain varieties of palms and ferns. Aoshima represents a balance between nature, spirituality and geological uniqueness, making it an exciting destination for tourists, photographers, botany lovers and seekers of spiritual peace.
