Shangri-La, in Yunnan Province, sits at an altitude of approximately 3,200 meters and is home to Songzanlin Monastery, the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the region and one of the most important in all of Southwest China. Surrounded by mountains, grasslands, and valleys of great beauty, the city combines profound spirituality with a spectacular natural environment. The name Shangri-La comes from the novel Lost Horizon, published by James Hilton in 1933. It described a hidden valley in the Himalayas, a mythical place associated with peace, harmony, and longevity. Inspired by this story and the extraordinary surroundings of the region, the Chinese city of Zhongdian officially adopted the name Shangri-La in 2001, reinforcing its identity as the “lost paradise” that so many travelers dream of discovering.
